Ruhr Oel GmbH – bp Gelsenkirchen operates the Horst and Scholven sites in Gelsenkirchen, which have existed for over 90 years.
Originally established in the 1930s as coal hydrogenation plants, these sites now form a refinery complex producing both mineral oil products and feedstocks for the petrochemical industry. At these facilities, the various components of crude oil are separated. The lighter fractions – such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil – account for up to 60 percent. Heavier components are either processed into bitumen or converted into lighter products and petroleum coke using conversion units.

The Scholven site also produces a wide range of petrochemical base chemicals, with a strong focus on olefin production. Two plants produce around one million tonnes of ethylene and approximately 500,000 tonnes of propylene per year. These are processed into plastics, including by Sabic Polyolefins, which is located directly on-site in Scholven. Other petrochemical products include xylenes, cumene, cyclohexane, methanol, and ammonia.

Against this background, bp, Evonik, Nowega, OGE, and RWE Generation signed a memorandum of understanding in 2020 to jointly develop this hydrogen infrastructure.
